I have been really impressed with this course. I started taking lessons just before my 61st birthday and for the first year thought I would never get beyond basic variations of Up-Down strumming. This course has taken me way beyond that. I am now even “hearing” strum patterns to some of my favorite songs when I listen to the radio/iPod. Thanks Colin! Great Course!
Hi Colin, I have gone through the Essentials of Strumming & Rhythm Guitar course, and I’m very pleased with my progress.
Even though I can play the guitar it gave me different ideas of how to plan out for different songs.
Congratulations on putting together a very good course.
Hi Colin, I very much enjoy working through your courses. I am presently on your blues rhythm course part 7 – terrific teaching and content! Cheers, Jon
Colin, I have learned so much between you and Jonathan, I can’t even begin to say. I haven’t played since I was a kid and I am 59 now. I am having so much fun!
Hi Colin, thanks for your email wanting to follow up on my progress with the Guitar Improvising Course. I’m about half way thru the first DVD and finding it absolutely fantastic.
The way you present is very good, and since I’ve been using your instructional material the light bulbs have started to illuminate. I now tackle songs that I used to just look at and say Nah too hard and move on to something easier… like easy chords.
I have two other courses of yours and I would like to take this opportunity to Thank You very much for your help in getting me to play some real guitar and real songs not just pussyfoot crap.
Thanks and Cheers Colin
I’ve been muddling around the guitar for quite a number of years. I spent enough time muddling and self teaching that I developed some good chops, techniques, some loose theory and the ability to ‘mimic’ accurately.
While my playing may have sounded good, I wasn’t going where I wanted to be… a real guitarist/musician (even if not on a professional level). I have found no course of instruction, written or in person that puts the aspects of theory and application together the way that Colin has been able to do.
From the lessons in the Academy to the premium courses, like the kick butt Ultimate Blues Chords course, everything lesson has applicable value. I recommend RiffNinja.com to any person I know interested in picking up a guitar!
I learned so much in the DVD set, and the book really was very useful. You do not need to turn on the video after watching it for three times, I just do my strumming practice through the accompanied book. Maybe in a couple of weeks this will be in the shelf. Thanks, my money was well spent in this series.
I bought the Slide Guitar Essentials course. I am very pleased with the explanations and all the theory parts. It is so great to know the “why” we play what we do!
Thanks for all your hard work.
I purchased this course a few years ago and since then have still been learning basics in all other areas, (and other Riff Ninja lessons) especially chord shape/muscle memory.
Well I recently purchased a guitar that I feel is more noteworthy for playing than any of the others in my collection. I also just got quite interested in the music by Neil Young since he plays Harmonica with some of his songs. While strumming along to the song with my new ‘Taylor 314-EC’ (Thank You very much) I referred back to this strumming course in which Colin included the pattern for ‘Heart Of Gold’ . . . I would like to say ‘Kudos’ to Colin.
The pattern was on the money and quite a good experience to able to play along with the song in such a competent manner. It felt great!
The best part of all is that I believe my beautiful sweet girl was also listening in on me while I was playing 🙂
Keep up the good work in providing the RiffNinja lessons. They are much appreciated!
There’s no doubt that I’m a better player since getting the lesson. There’s a wealth of information there you just can’t get anywhere. I was stuck before & now I have a renewed interest, not to mention this stuff is very, very interesting. I have other lessons from you guys & I love them all. Thanks very much & I truly hope you keep up the good work

Testimonials
Colin this is a very good lesson. Take it from somebody who has struggled with chords for the last 3 years. I’m also a 60 year old man for those of you who think you might be too old to pick up guitar, learn and have fun with it. I was told by a couple of people when I first started venturing into chords that it is something that you just have to work out for yourself. I was stunned because I had no idea of where to even begin trying to learn to chords and transition into playing chord progressions. I have gotten better at chord playing because of my tenacity and desire to learn to play, but this lesson has added to my knowledge and I am confident that I can move on from here. Thanks for this Colin, you’re a good teacher.
You know when I first opened the Blues R&R course, after the first lesson I thought yep okay, but tell me something new. However, having progressed through the rest I quickly realized how much I did not know!
In short, a great course for anyone who thinks they know it or even those who do know it and want to refresh their memory adding more spice to their playing. There are a lot of useful tips and different angles to approach and improve anyone’s guitar playing.
Well done sir, good job.
Hi Colin, I very much enjoy working through your courses. I am presently on your blues rhythm course part 7 – terrific teaching and content! Cheers, Jon
I am an old dude who has taken up guitar late. The package has helped me understand strumming. 16th note strumming is still a challenge though. I agree with the Merle of Las Vegas comment about the strums being presented as a jam session. However I am convinced the lessons will help me improve my rhythm and strumming abilities.
I really like the information on the use of passing notes. Adds a lot to whatever you’re playing. Thanks Colin.
Hi Colin, excellent lesson as always. I’ve learned more in the last week-and-a-half than in years of intermittent lessons.
Your teaching style is fantastic and I hope to be jamming along with you relatively soon in the more advanced stuff. However, first I’ll learn to walk.
I never appreciated just how important scales were before now. Still fighting the lazy left hand, but with your help I’ll win all the battles and eventually win the war.
Cheers mate.
I bought Colin’s “Essentials of Strumming & Rhythm Guitar” course after having purchased several “Improve your Rhythm” courses because although I have been playing guitar for about 40 years, the last 10 or so without a significant break 😉 my theory, though I may say so myself, is pretty good however my timing sucked (as I found out when I tried to record a song I had recently written having first laid down a rhythm section in Ableton)!
No other course (and there were quite a few) seemed to help. Colin’s was a last ditch attempt before I resigned myself to recording just my guitar and voice and progressing no further. I have watched and re-watched Video 1 now and already my timing has improved dramatically, now I am looking forward to starting Video 2 soon.
Colin’s teaching method is excellent and I can really understand where he is coming from when he takes time to explain why and how things work on guitar.
Really enjoyed Colin’s bag of tricks course, really useful. Thanks!
Wow – this has to be one of the best online lessons i have ever come across. Thank you.
I am a huge Stevie Ray Vaughan fan but as a relative beginner/immediate thought it was out of reach for me. I think I will need to watch this several times and find some way to slow down the playback to half speed 🙂 to get it all.
Hi Colin,
You have shot your self in the the foot this time 😉
This course is so complete, I will never have to buy another. There is so much information, theory and knowledge in it, that your teachings can be adapted to any other style of music.
I knew how to play, yet only did what I was shown. I didn’t know why. Now I can break down any song or even write one. Scales?? What was that??….before.
Colin, you are the best teacher I ever had.
I can’t wait for Stages 3 & 4
